Business and, for a while, domestic life, satisfy Cipriano, but this is also a world in which religion — and dogmatic hegemony — are being challenged. Throughout the story of Cipriano’s conversion and adoption of heretical ideas, the Holy Office is in the background, represented mostly by the fear of spies and the extraordinary efforts at secrecy taken by the members of the small sect of protestants.
